2008 Girls Soccer STATE CHAMPIONS

Heading into the 2008 season the Waubonsie Valley girls soccer team had the daunting task of following up the most successful season in WVHS history. At the conclusion of the 2008 season, it was obvious that the girls were up to the challenge! The Warriors were led by Head Coach Julie Bergstrom and assisted by Pete Lambert, Josh Robinson, Jen Vanderploeg, and Sammy Somola. The 2008 team completed the season with a perfect 10-0 record in the Upstate Eight Conference (UEC). This unbeaten record in conference was the Warriors third year in a row for the girls soccer team and their third UEC conference Championship in as many years. In addition, the Warriors finished the season for the second year unbeaten, completing the season with a 26-0-1 record. The 2008 Waubonsie Valley Girls Soccer Team finished the season ranked number one in the nation by studentsports.com and number two in the nation by the NSCAA. During the Warriors IHSA State Championship run the girls once again showed their dominance on the pitch. The team compiled a total of 27 goals while only giving up 2 goals in eight games, this included a total of six shutouts. The 2008 girls soccer team still is second all-time in the IHSA with 15 consecutive shutouts.
Members of the 2008 Undefeated State Champions Girls Soccer Team include: Kelsey Bachtell, Elena Bickel, Emily Bielaga, Hillary Blake, Jessica Blake, Rachel Bostick (captain), Maggie Carson, Vanessa DiBernardo, Allison Fox, Colleen Gorkis, Megan Green, Gabby Guido, Claire Hanold (captain), Hannah Klancic, Catherine McClellan, Jordan Myers, Jessie Morgan, Bretton Newcomb, Jessica Price, Bri Rodriguez (captain), Kerri Skotnicki, Ali Stahlke, Chelsea Stoeckight, Molly Thayer, & Mary Wright. The Warriors finished the season with five UEC All-Conference selections, they included; Jessica Blake, Rachel Bostick, Vanessa DiBernardo, Claire Hanold, & Bri Rodriguez. Juniors Bri Rodriguez and Claire Hanold and Sophomore Vanessa DiBernardo concluded the season as IHSA All-State recipients, while Rodriguez and DiBernardo would also receive NSCAA All-American honors at the conclusion of the ’08 season. This second consecutive championship season continued to lay the groundwork for many more successful girls soccer seasons for the Warriors, as two years later the girls went on to win a third IHSA State Championship in four seasons!!
