Coach Phil Galow is being inducted into Waubonsie Val-ley’s Athletic Hall of Fame for his continued tenure as a coach of young athletes at Waubonsie Valley High School.He had been a three-sport coach for his entire time as a teacher at Waubonsie Valley High School. Coaching boys’ basketball (sophomore and freshman head coach) for 33 years, and head girls’ and boys’ tennis coach for the last 43 years. During his 43 years of coaching girls’ tennis, he had com-piled a 55% winning percentage with a record of 443-326-31. He has coached 25 individual women conference champions and 62 women state qualifiers. During his 42 years of coaching boys’ tennis, he had compiled a 59% winning percentage with a record of 363-245-11. He had coached 2 IHSA Team Sectional Championships and 4 Conference Team Championships, finishing 10th in state this past season in which he was recognized as the Coach of Year for the Sectional Ar-ea. He has coached 60 individual men’s conference champions and 63 IHSA men’s state qualifiers.Coach Galow’s records continue to grow, that is what makes this induction more challenging as he continues to head both girls’ and boys’ tennis teams at Waubonsie Valley. However, it is the dedication of time and passion towards youth athletes in which he is being acknowledged. Coach Galow thrives on watching young players come in as freshman and leaving as stronger competitor, teammate, and life-long tennis player after four years. From his summer lessons with young athletes to even working with graduated athletes, he is always there for his athletes and the game of tennis.It is coaches such as Coach Galow in which students have excelled at opportunities outside of the academic day. He has provided this outlet for newcomers and some of our most experienced players to grow connections with one another while representing our school with class and determination.
